Comparing collision repair estimates

Check the repair scope before comparing totals.

Use the same damage description

Give each shop the same photographs, vehicle information and description of the incident. Mention any previous work in the affected area. Ask whether the estimate follows a visual review or a closer inspection, since those starting points may produce different scopes.

Read the proposed operations

Compare which panels and operations each estimate includes. Ask the shop to explain proposed repair versus replacement, paint preparation and any associated work. A lower total is difficult to interpret if an estimate leaves out operations included by another shop.

Discuss findings after inspection

Ask how the shop handles additional damage discovered after disassembly and how it obtains approval for changes. Confirm who will keep you informed. If an insurer is involved, clarify the communication process with both parties rather than assuming a shop listing establishes coverage.

Confirm the practical terms

Discuss scheduling, parts availability, collection and the shop’s stated warranty before authorising work. Keep the estimate and subsequent approvals together. At handover, ask for an explanation of completed work and any care or follow-up instructions specific to your vehicle.
